How Long Does a Water Heater Last...
Typically a water heater will last about 8–12 years.  Even longer.  It depends on the amount of minerals in your water, the minerals destroy the liner in the water heater.  There is an ANODE ROD in the water heater that collects the minerals. Eventually the Anode Rod gets eaten away by the minerals.  Typically we see the anode rod gone by the 3rd ~ 4th year.  When the anode rod is gone, then the liner of the tank gets eroded. However, you can extend the life of the water heater by having a filter installed that removes water scale, dirt and rust just for the water heater.

Not Leaking, but won't stay Lit...
If the tank is not leaking, but won't stay lit, this means either the thermocoupler needs to be replaced or the gas valve.

If the water heater is not under warranty, the question then becomes, “Should I repair, or replace my water heater?”
The depreciation of a water heater is $100 a year.  Therefore, an 8 year old water heater that has a replacement cost of $800 has a current value of $0.00.  A 7 year old water heater that has a replacement cost of $800 has a current value of $100.

If it cost over $100 to replace the thermocoupler, and let’s say 4 months later the tank starts to leak, you wasted money having the thermocoupler replaced.  The cost of a new water heater can be over $700 plus $100 that was paid a couple of months ago for the thermocoupler comes to $800.

It’s a risk that one takes in trying to extend the life of an old water heater. In the long term, it is cheaper to just replace the water heater.  If the water heater is only 3 – 4 years old, it’s then worth replacing the thermocoupler.
